Iceland Winter Adventure: Reykjavik, Northern Lights, Golden Circle, Glacier Hike and More
Day 1: Arrival in Reykjavik
Upon arrival at Keflavik International Airport, one of our representatives will meet you and transfer you directly to your hotel in Reykjavik, the vibrant capital of Iceland. Your stay will be in a 3-star hotel, located close to the city’s main attractions. All rooms feature a private en-suite bathroom, satellite TV, and breakfast is served each morning.
After check-in, the rest of your day is free to explore the city. Whether you decide to wander through Reykjavik’s charming streets, visit the Harpa Concert Hall or admire the view from Hallgrímskirkja church, you’ll begin to experience the unique spirit of Iceland from the very start.
Evening: Northern Lights Tour
For many travellers, seeing the Northern Lights is the highlight of a winter trip to Iceland. It’s a truly unforgettable sight—bands of green, pink, and sometimes violet light weaving across the Arctic sky. Caused by solar particles interacting with the Earth's atmosphere, the Aurora Borealis requires clear skies and darkness to be seen.
Our Northern Lights tours are guided by specially trained experts who monitor weather conditions and cloud coverage daily to maximise your chances of seeing the lights. We never operate the tour unless there’s a good forecast, and as a result, we have an excellent success rate. If you don’t see the lights on your first attempt, you’re welcome to join the tour again on a later night free of charge.
Guides will also give you tips on how to photograph the aurora, and we offer free use of camera tripods (subject to availability). If you own one, we recommend bringing it with you.
Day 2: The Golden Circle and Snowmobiling on Langjökull Glacier
After breakfast, it’s time to board a comfortable coach for a full day exploring the Golden Circle, Iceland’s most iconic sightseeing route. You’ll be joined by a professional guide who’ll share stories, history and insights along the way.
Þingvellir National Park
Your first stop is Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the birthplace of the world’s oldest parliament. Situated beside Iceland’s largest lake, this dramatic rift valley marks the point where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are slowly pulling apart. It’s a place of both geological wonder and deep national significance.
Geysir Geothermal Area
From Þingvellir, you’ll drive through scenic farmland to the Geysir Hot Spring Area, where steaming vents, bubbling mud pools and erupting geysers dominate the landscape. The star of the show is Strokkur, which erupts every few minutes, shooting boiling water high into the air.
Gullfoss Waterfall
Next is the stunning Gullfoss Waterfall, often called the "golden waterfall" of Iceland. The rushing Hvítá River plunges in two dramatic stages into a deep canyon, sending mist high into the air. On clear days, the Langjökull Glacier can be seen in the distance.
Snowmobiling on Langjökull Glacier
The final adventure of the day takes you into the highlands for an exhilarating snowmobile ride on Langjökull Glacier, Iceland’s second-largest ice cap. After gearing up, you’ll zoom across this frozen landscape for an experience that is both thrilling and utterly unforgettable.
Day 3: South Coast Adventure and Glacier Hike
Today, we journey along Iceland’s south coast, a region filled with glaciers, waterfalls, and volcanic landscapes.
Sólheimajökull Glacier Hike
Your first major stop is Sólheimajökull, a glacier tongue extending from the mighty Mýrdalsjökull ice cap, which covers the infamous Katla volcano. Here, with the help of a certified glacier guide, you’ll strap on crampons and explore the glacier’s surface—its deep crevasses, ridges, and shimmering blue ice make it a truly awe-inspiring experience.
Scenic Drive & Volcano Views
As we continue along the coast, you’ll pass beneath the shadow of Eyjafjallajökull and Hekla, two of Iceland’s most famous volcanoes. On clear days, the Westman Islands are also visible just offshore.
Skógafoss Waterfall
We’ll stop at Skógafoss, a powerful 65-metre waterfall that can be viewed from both below and above via a staircase leading to a panoramic view of the surrounding glaciers and coastline. It’s a perfect place for photos and one of the most scenic spots in Iceland.
Seljalandsfoss Waterfall
Finally, we visit the beautiful Seljalandsfoss, a waterfall that you can walk behind for a truly unique perspective. The view from the cave behind the falling water is a highlight for many and the perfect end to an incredible day.
Day 4: Free Day or Optional Tours (For 4-Night Stays)
If you’ve chosen the 4-night package, you’ll have an extra day to explore Reykjavik at your own pace or join another tour. You could visit museums, go whale watching, or even take a relaxing dip in the Blue Lagoon. Let us know if you’d like to add an excursion—we have plenty of options to choose from.
If you’re on the 3-night package, today is your departure day. After check-out, we’ll transfer you back to Keflavik Airport for your flight home.
