The East part of Iceland is a region filled with mountainous and narrow fjords, glaciers, forests, bird cliffs and desserts. In the East fjords, you will discover natural wonders and you might ever spot the legendary aquatic monster- giant worm that is said to live in the Lagarfljót River.

In this tour you will see the most popular places in east Iceland. Starting with a drive along the scenic south coast to the east, you will be able to see the magnificent waterfalls, the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull, and you will also have the chance to visit Petra’s Stone collection. See the magnificent waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss and Skógarfoss, the largest forest in Iceland, Hallormsstaðaskógur, see the puffins at the northernmost fjord of the Eastfjords, Borgarfjörður and the Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1: ARRIVAL IN ICELAND

Arrive in Iceland and pick up your hire car from the airport and head to the capital Reykjavik. If time allows, go for an exploration walk around Reykjavík before spending the night in a 3 or 4* hotel.

DAY 2: ICELAND´S SOUTH COAST

After breakfast head out of the city and travel along the southern coast of Icleand on the main road and stop at Seljalandsfoss waterfoss where it is possible to walk behind the waterfall, at the edge of the worlds famous Eyjafjallajökull glacier, famous for its 2010 volcanic eruption which grounded flights all around Europe. Stop in the town of Vík and go for a walk on the black sand beach. Tonight you’ll stay at a 3* in the Vatnajökull region.

DAY 3: HÖFN AND THE EAST FJORDS

This morning drive east along the mighty glacier Vatnajökull. Stop at Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and witness one of Iceland´s most magnificent natural wonders. Visit the small fishing village of Höfn before proceeding further east where you will drive along the scenic east fjords before reaching your hotel and staying the night at the Fosshotel Eastfjords or similar.

DAY 4: LAGARFLJÓT RIVER AND HALLORMSSTAÐUR

Spend a whole day discovering east Iceland. Travel along the coastline of the Lagarfljót River and stop in Hallormsstaður, where Iceland’s largest forest is located and see the magnificent waterfall Hengifoss.

DAY 5: BORGARFJORDUR AND THE PUFFIN

A day tour is available to visit the northernmost fjord of the Eastfjords, see Borgarfjörður famous for its large puffin population. Before returning to the hotel, you must visit Álfaborg, a uniquely shaped rock castle, where the queen of the elves is believed to dwell.

DAY 6: PETRA´S STONE AND MINERAL COLLECTION

Today you travel back to the town of Höfn. Take your time to enjoy the stunning east fjords and their unforgettable scenery. On your way to Höfn, stop in Stöðvarfjörður to visit Petra’s Stone collection, a large collection of Icelandic stones before heading to your 3* hotel in the Vatnajökull region.

DAY 7: GLACIER LAGOON AND SKAFTAFELL NATIONAL PARK

Drive back to Reykjavík. On the way, stop at Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and at the Skaftafell national park. The folk museum at Skogar is worth a visit which is close to Skógarfoss waterfall before ending up back in the capital and checking in to your 3 or 4* hotel for the night.

Day 8: DEPART FOR HOME

If time allows: Enjoy Reykjavík, or explore the Reykjanes Peninsula with a stop at the famous Blue Lagoon for relaxation. You’ll then drop off your hire car and board your flight back home.
