The next day you will go on an amazing day tour takes you around the Golden Circle to see three of Iceland’s highlights Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir geothermal area and Thingvellir National Park.
Þingvellir National Park
Located on the northern shores of Þingvallavatn, Iceland's largest lake, Þingvellir is the national pride of Iceland and our first National Park. It is, for one, a key location in Icelandic history as the oldest existing parliament in the world first assembled there in 930 AD. For this reason, Þingvellir has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is, therefore, a protected national park due to its unique geology and natural features. From the viewing area the Almannagjá canyon between two tectonic plates can be seen, a visual representation of continental drift.
Geysir Hot Springs
A favourite stop along the Golden Circle is the highly active Geysir Hot Spring Area with boiling mud pits and the lively Strokkur which spouts water 30 meters into the air every few minutes. The area became active more than 1000 years ago and comprises more than a dozen hot spring holes. Although one can only see steam emerging from the surface of Geysir these days, its name was adopted to represent spouting hot springs all over the world. Along the tour, the newly opened Geysir Center offers guests a chance to use the restroom and to catch some refreshments as well as lunch.
Gullfoss Waterfall
As one of the most popular attractions in all of Iceland, Gullfoss is a waterfall located in the Canyon of the Hvítá River in the southwest of the country. The beautiful Hvítá river rushes southward in three steps into a narrow canyon with a breath-taking roar and grandeur. Furthermore, on clear days the magnificent Langjökull glacier, Iceland's second largest glacier, can be seen in the distance.
We then head to soak in the waters of the Blue Lagoon, one of the wonders of the world. The Blue Lagoon is one of Iceland's most famous tourist attractions and considered by many to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, as well as an unmissable part of any visit to Iceland.
The Blue Lagoon is surrounded by a mossy lava field, offering incredible scenery, with state of the art facilities, a unique atmosphere and silica masks and water that make your skin extra firm, yet incredibly soft! For these reasons and many more, visitors from all over the world visit the Blue Lagoon daily, and many return here again and again.
For the Blue Lagoon you have the Comfort Package and you will receive entrance to the Blue Lagoon, silica mud mask, use of a towel, and a drink of your choice.
After having enjoyed all that the Blue Lagoon has to offer, you return to Reykjavík on one of the new and comfortable coaches, offering you free Wi-Fi.
The following morning, after breakfast our tour guides will pick you up from your hotel or designated bus stop and we will head out of Reykjavik and make our way eastwards along the south coast. Our first stop will be the Seljalandsfoss waterfall where can actually walk behind the falls but remember your rain coat as you may get a little damp.
We then head on to another of Iceland’s famous waterfalls, Skógafoss that is located at the foot of the infamous volcano, Eyjafjallajökull. If it’s a clear day, you will also get a great view of another volcano mountain glacier, Mýrdalsjokull. We then continue on to Reynisfjara, a black sandy volcanic beach where you will see the picturesque basalt column formations and the famous Reynisdrangar peaks.
We will drive through the charming picture postcard town of Vík on our way to our hotel for the night. Throughout the day, you will get to see some breathtakingly beautiful landscapes of vast lava fields, volcanos, black sandy beaches and glacier tongues.
You will spend the night in the Adventure Hotel Hof which is located close to the Vatnajökull National Park in Öræfi, one of the most beautiful and extraordinary regions in Iceland, often referred to as “Sveitin milli sanda“ which loosely translates as “The Land Between the Sands“.
The Reception house has a cosy lounge and spacious restaurant. These spaces are communal and have free Wi-Fi internet access. Parts of the hotel are in buildings that were originally used as stables and barns for sheep but have been transformed into a comfortable country hotel with modern touches that provides personal service to its visitors.
In the bistro, you can enjoy breakfast and evening meals made from pure and fresh locally sourced ingredients. They offer both fish and meat courses and a vegetarian/vegan option for guests. There is also a choice of wine, beer, spirits, soft drinks and hot drinks on offer.
The rooms include made-up beds, towels and complimentary tea/coffee plus an en-suite bathroom and breakfast is served from 8:00-9.30am.
The following morning after breakfast, we head out to the renowned Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon, made famous by several blockbuster movies including Batman Begins and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, to name just a couple. You will see beautiful Icebergs, some incredibly large which have broken off the receding Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. They float serenely in the huge lagoon before gliding off into the Atlantic Ocean. Many of these icebergs are washed onto the nearby Diamond Beach, you will see them glittering like diamonds, as they rest on the black volcanic sands of the beach.
We then head into the glacier with a qualified guide! Ice caves are amazing and new caves are formed each winter by the melting and freeze cycle of the glacier. They are always changing, both from year to year and within each winter and our journey into an ice cave will give photographers the most amazing opportunity to capture the shimmering blue light which passes through the glacial ice.
We will then start to head towards Reykjavík. We stop at Skaftafell Nature Reserve in Vatnajokull National Park, a green area in the midst of amazingly jagged mountains and glacier-topped peaks, the splendid scenery of Skaftafell is certain to be a highlight of your tour. We will of course keep an eye out for the Northern Lights on our way back to the city and will make a short stop if conditions allow for it before arriving back into Reykjavík around 21:00 pm. Where you will check into your hotel.
Prices are based on 2 sharing and are based on London departures but we can offer this tour from the regional airports that serve Iceland. We can also offer this deal staying in your hotel of choice and upgrade to a 4* or we can offer apartments if you prefer. Please enquire.
Your safety is our priority and sometimes weather or road conditions mean that access to certain ice caves is unavailable and/or unsafe. During the summer months (from April to October), we’ll visit the Ice Cave Under the Volcano. If it’s inaccessible, we’ll do a glacier hike instead.
