4* ION Adventure Hotel in Nesjavellir including 4x4 SUV
Less than an hour’s drive from the hustle and bustle of Reykjavík and set against a backdrop of majestic mountainous lava fields, ION Adventure Hotel is an unforgettable experience. The hotel was once a an abandoned inn that housed workers from the nearby Nesjavellir Geothermal power plant and it juts out from the base of a long-dormant volcano, Mount Hengill.
Situated right in the middle of Thingvellir National Park. The surrounding landscape of moss-speckled lava fields is remote and captivating and the Golden Circle route is close by so natural wonders as the Geysir hot springs and Gullfoss waterfall are within easy reach. The closest town is Selfoss, a 40-minute drive away, which has cafés and restaurants, an art gallery and a swimming pool.
Due to the hotels remote location, well away from any light polluition from towns or the city, the area is ideal for seeing the Northern Lights on a clear winter’s night. The hotel even offers a Northern Lights wakeup call service.
Whether you are seeking a quiet, soulful soak beneath the Northern Lights, a challenging trek across an ancient glacier or a day of fly-fishing in plentiful icy rivers there is so much that you can do from the ION Adventure hotel.
Silfra restaurant is furnished in a sleek minimal style and highlights local flavours in contemporary dishes using local, seasonal, sustainable ingredients, much of it from local farms and fishermen. Breakfast is a decent array of scrambled and hard-boiled eggs, bacon, breads and cereals plus juices, fruits, vegetables, cold cuts, and pastries.
Northern Lights Bar's comfortable lounge area provides the ideal spot for admiring dramatic landscapes and the night sky through floor-to-ceiling windows. They offer a range of chic drinks plus a decent range of beers, wines and spirits, many from local microbreweries.
The partially exposed Lava Spa offers guests a sauna, an Icelandic massage with herbs and ash from the notorious Eyjafjallajokull volcano and a long outdoor, naturally heated hot pool. There is also a small gym.
