The following day your morning is free to explore Reykjavik, enjoy the capitals museums and art galleries or just soak up the lovely city atmosphere. Then we start the afternoon by visiting Iceland's most famous attraction, the Blue Lagoon. The Blue Lagoon is one of Iceland's most famous tourist attractions and considered by many to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, as well as an unmissable part of one´s visit to Iceland.
The Blue Lagoon offers lava and moss filled scenery, state of the art facilities, a unique atmosphere and silica masks that make your skin extra firm, yet incredibly soft! Included in this combo is the Blue Lagoon Comfort Package where you receive entrance to the Blue Lagoon, silica mud mask, use of a towel, and a drink of your choice.
After couple of hours and an amazing warm soak in the geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon, you head back to Reykjavik on one of our new and comfortable coaches, offering you free Wi-Fi. Upon arrival back in Reykjavik, you have some free time to relax, have dinner and wait for your next adventure in the evening, a hunt for the extraordinary northern lights. Make sure to wear warm clothes!
The Northern Lights Tour in Iceland takes you to see a spectacular natural phenomenon that happens during the winter months. The northern lights, also known as Aurora Borealis, are caused by the interaction of particles from the sun with the upper atmosphere near the North Pole.
The locations visited during the northern lights tour vary from day to day depending on weather conditions. Our northern lights team studies thoroughly the weather and aurora forecasts in order to find the best location each night to spot the lights.
The following morning, after breakfast our guides will pick you up for your 4 Day Escorted Guided Tour and we head out of Reykjavik towards the famous Golden Circle where our first stop is the Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was the historic location of the Icelandic Parliament, the Alþingi. Established in 930ce., this is the oldest continuously operated Parliament in the world, situated in one of the most geologically fascinating places as Thingvellir is home to a rift valley between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates and an incredible landscape.
Next, you’ll visit the geothermal Geysir Geothermal Area. Geysir was once a magnificent geyser that lent its name to the English word geyser. Though now dormant, its neighbour Strokkur bursts with scalding water up to 25 meters high every few minutes.
Our final stop is Gullfoss or the Golden Falls, which is the most-visited waterfall in Iceland. The powerful Hvita River roar down the two-tiered cliffs into the canyon below. After the Golden Circle, we head southward and on a clear day, we’ll get great views of Mount Hekla on the way to Seljalandsfoss, one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world. You can walk behind these graceful falls to enjoy the view from both sides so make sure you bring your rain coat.
Your hotel for the night will be Hotel Geirland, close to the small town of Kirkjubæjarklaustur, a fantastic area to catch the Northern Lights if the conditions are right. All the rooms offer tea and coffee making facilities and mountain views. The main building has a restaurant, a bar with TV and free Wi-Fi. Some of the hotels cosy rooms are set in individual cottages in the garden.
After breakfast, we head off eastwards towards the magnificent Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and nearby Diamond Beach. The lagoon is filled with icebergs of all shapes and sizes, as they glide towards the Atlantic. Many are washed ashore at the Diamond Beach, where they glitter like diamonds on the black sands. Ocean birds are plenty here and you might even spot a seal.
Leaving behind Jokulsarlon, we head to Skaftafell Nature Reserve were we join a certified glacier guide and step into the mesmerising world of the Vatnajokull Glacier. After taking a beautiful glacier hike, we’ll enter a natural ice cave where you’ll have some time to explore and take photos. The ice cave we visit will be chosen based on current conditions. We will then return for another night in the Hotel Geirland.
The following morning after breakfast we’ll start our day slowly driving towards Reykjavik and making plenty of stops along the way. If the roads are clear, we’ll start the day off with a quick detour to Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon.
We then visit the iconic Eldhraun lava field before heading to Reynisfjara black beach where the powerful waves of the Atlantic Ocean really show their force. Make sure you visit the black basalt cave before you leave the beach. Reynisfjara is famous for its basalt columns just off the shore, called the Reynisdrangar.
Moving on from Reynisfjara, our next stop will be Skógafoss, an impressive waterfall that drops 60m into a tranquil pool below. There are 527 steps leading to the top, yet the steep climb is worth it for the panorama alone. The famous volcano, Eyjafjallajökull, lurks high above the waterfall, so if visibility is good you’ll get a glimpse of this magnificent mountain glacier. We then head back to the capital where we will arrive late afternoon or early evening and check into your hotel.
On this final day of the tour, you will go on a once-in-a-lifetime experience to hike up to Meradalir to see the recently erupted volcano site! Eruptions are rare events, and they are very hostile in nature. This element of rarity, the sheer power, and the potentially destructive forces behind eruptions make them hypnotically fascinating. We will then drive out to hunt the magical Northern Lights. We will be back in Reykjavik around midnight where you’ll spend your last night before travelling to the airport the following day.
Prices are based on 2 sharing and are based on London departures but we can offer this tour from the regional airports that serve Iceland. We can also offer this deal staying in your hotel of choice and upgrade to a 4* or we can offer apartments if you prefer. Please enquire.
