You’ll arrive in Iceland from the UK and be transferred to your 3* Hotel in the Capital Reykjavik for a two night stay. Your hotel will have a private bathroom and you can enjoy a buffet breakfast each morning.
On your second day you will be picked up from your hotel and taken on a tour of the famous Golden Circle and enjoy a stop at the wonderful Fontana Wellness Spa.
This amazing day tour takes you around the Golden Circle to see three of Iceland’s highlights Gullfoss waterfall, Geyser geothermal area and Thingvellir National Park, before heading to Fontana’s natural steam baths.
The original sauna was built in the 1920s and was little more than a shack with two compartments, built above the hot spring that bubbles and gurgles below the ground. Today, a modern complex welcomes you to relax with various hot tubs and steam baths naturally heated by Icelandic hot springs.
Upon arrival in Fontana you will take a short walk with a local person to a nearby natural hot spring which is used as a local natural bakery for the village. You will get to know the methods how to bake a loaf of bread in a hot spring and watch while they dig up a typical Icelandic rye bread which has been slowly baked in the hot spring. Before dipping into the Fontana hot tubs and enjoy the natural steam baths you will be offered to taste the rye bread.
At Fontana you can have drinks while relaxing in the hot spring water and enjoy the spectacular view of the lake before heading back to Reykjavik.
On Day 3 after breakfast you will be picked up for your escorted tour. We head out of the capital and make a quick stop in Borgarnes, the capital of the West Iceland located in the City Fjord. We then stop at Eiriksstadir and see the beautiful turf-roofed house which was once home to Eirik the Red and his son Leif the Lucky, who sailed to America long before Columbus was born!
We then head to the coastal cliffs in Króksfjarðarnes, the gate to the Westfjords. Dozens of rocky islands fill up a small bay on the edge of Breiafjrur Fjord. Our next port of call is Vatnsfjrur, home to Ingmann Waterfalls and a stunning canyon.
Next is Birkimel Bay with its sandy beach. There you will find Krosslaug Swimming Pool one of the examples of old times pools that were popular amongst locals across the country. If you fancy a dip in warm geothermal waters please make sure to take swimwear and towel with you!
Then well cross a towering mountain range called Kleifaheii on route to the Patreksfjrur area. There’s an intriguing sight to see at the top! The engineers who built the mountain road raised a 5-meter-high stone statue called Kleifabi in their spare time, marking the high point of their work.
We will then head to our hotel for the night, you will stay in a cosy country hotel located in the Patreksfjörður village or nearbywhere and your room will have a private bathroom and a buffet breakfast is served the following morning.
After breakfast we head back out for the Westfjord Highlights and our first stop is the Latrabjarg bird cliffs. We’ll follow gravel paths cut into steep mountainsides until we reach the famous bird colonies and Bjargtangar Lighthouse at Icelands westernmost point. The cliff top is more than 440 meters above the surf. Afterward we make a quick stop at Gardhur, where we see the stranded fishing boat which is as old as the Titanic!
We’ll take you to the multi-coloured sands of the 10-kilometer beach at Rauðisandur. Most Icelandic beaches are made of black volcanic sand, but Rauðisandur appears red and golden. Heading north we stop for pictures at Fossfjörður waterfall and the Instagram icon “A-House”. The day’s highlight comes next, the wedding cake-shaped waterfall, Dynjandi. The Thunderer crashes down over 100 meters in a wonderful “waterfall ladder.” You can climb to the top for a closer view.
Then we’ll make our way to our overnight stay in Ísafjörður, stopping for another photo opportunity at Önundarfjörður Pier for outstanding views. Making our way through a 9-kilometer road tunnel, we’ll arrive in Ísafjörður, the capital of the Westfjords!
After a goodnights sleep and breakfast we set out again crossing the 5km long tunnel that will take us to Bólugnvarvik, a small fishing town. We will go on the mountain road towards Bolafjall mountain which is 638m high and walk on the viewing platform built over steep cliffs. Then, on the way back to Ísafjörður, we will stop at charming Ósvör Fishing Village, a collection of turf-roofed buildings and Óshólaviti Lighthouse.
From Ísafjörður, you’ll enjoy unforgettable views wherever you look as the road traces its way up and down seven breath-taking fjords. Looking north, you’ll see the famous wildlife preserve of Hornstrandir and the Arctic Ocean beyond. Arctic foxes roam this area, so keep a close eye out for the only native land mammal in Iceland. If you see one in the wild, you can still meet them at Arctic Fox Centre and contribute to their protection.
The road hugs the coastline and offers uninterrupted views of fjords, mountains, and glaciers in all directions. There are seal colonies, salmon farms, and turf-roofed huts and there are several incredible viewpoints along the way, we’ll stop at the best ones, depending on visibility on the day. Tröð is one of the most impressive, with astonishing views of Álftafjörður and Drangajökull glacier on Hornstrandir. Beyond this spot, we’ll stop at Steinninn í Skötufirði, a unique honeycomb rock formation.
Hvitanes is one of the most accessible places to spot seals in the Westfjords, so we’ll take a look at these charming creatures here. Before we leave the Westfjords, we’ll visit Gervidalsá, a pretty rock canyon with a fast-flowing waterfall close to the road.
Heading south, we’ll break the return journey to Reykjavík with one last stop will be by the Grábrók Volcanic Craters, where you can stretch your legs and walk up the stairs to multiple viewing platforms.
You will be dropped at your hotel and you can spend the rest of the evening enjoying the capitals many bars and restaurants before being transferred back to the airport the following day for your flight back to the UK.
