Your 3* Hotel will be within easy reach of the cities attractions and have facilities like Satellite TV. All rooms have a private en-suite bathroom and breakfast is served each morning. After check-in the rest of the day is free for you to start discover beautiful Reykjavik.
That evening we will pick you up from your hotel and search for the rare and elusive Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) in the skies around Reykjavík on this all-time winter bestseller! For many, seeing the Northern Lights is the reason to travel to our northern island in winter. They are mesmerizing, and a sight that will not be forgotten.
It is simple, nothing says “Icelandic Winter” like the idea of hunting for the Aurora Borealis. Created by solar storms originating from the sun, the Northern Lights need clear winter skies to be seen.
The expert operational team has decades of experience analysing weather patterns. We will review, each day, the cloud forecast and the northern lights forecast in detail. We will not venture out in search of them unless we think we have good chance. This means we have a high success ratio.
The next day you will go on an amazing day tour takes you around the Golden Circle to see three of Iceland’s highlights Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir geothermal area and Thingvellir National Park.
Þingvellir National Park
Located on the northern shores of Þingvallavatn, Iceland's largest lake, Þingvellir is the national pride of Iceland and our first National Park. It is, for one, a key location in Icelandic history as the oldest existing parliament in the world first assembled there in 930 AD. For this reason, Þingvellir has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is, therefore, a protected national park due to its unique geology and natural features. From the viewing area the Almannagjá canyon between two tectonic plates can be seen, a visual representation of continental drift.
Geysir Hot Springs
A favourite stop along the Golden Circle is the highly active Geysir Hot Spring Area with boiling mud pits and the lively Strokkur which spouts water 30 meters into the air every few minutes. The area became active more than 1000 years ago and comprises more than a dozen hot spring holes. Although one can only see steam emerging from the surface of Geysir these days, its name was adopted to represent spouting hot springs all over the world. Along the tour, the newly opened Geysir Center offers guests a chance to use the restroom and to catch some refreshments as well as lunch.
Gullfoss Waterfall
As one of the most popular attractions in all of Iceland, Gullfoss is a waterfall located in the Canyon of the Hvítá River in the southwest of the country. The beautiful Hvítá river rushes southward in three steps into a narrow canyon with a breath-taking roar and grandeur. Furthermore, on clear days the magnificent Langjökull glacier, Iceland's second largest glacier, can be seen in the distance.
We then head to soak in the waters of the Blue Lagoon, one of the wonders of the world. The Blue Lagoon is one of Iceland's most famous tourist attractions and considered by many to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, as well as an unmissable part of any visit to Iceland.
The Blue Lagoon is surrounded by a mossy lava field, offering incredible scenery, with state of the art facilities, a unique atmosphere and silica masks and water that make your skin extra firm, yet incredibly soft! For these reasons and many more, visitors from all over the world visit the Blue Lagoon daily, and many return here again and again.
For the Blue Lagoon you have the Comfort Package and you will receive entrance to the Blue Lagoon, silica mud mask, use of a towel, and a drink of your choice.
After having enjoyed all that the Blue Lagoon has to offer, you return to Reykjavík on one of the new and comfortable coaches, offering you free Wi-Fi.
The following morning after breakfast, we pick you up from your hotel or designated bus stop and we set out on your small group escorted tour to the North. We head out on the ring road and take an hour and a half drive to our first stop at the Grábrók volcanic crater. We will take a
We will pick you up at 09:00 am and hit the Ring Road. After a 1.5 hour drive, the day will start at the impressive volcanic crater, Grábrók. This crater was formed in an eruption approximately three thousand years ago and lies right next to the Ring Road. We will take a short, easy, but incredibly scenic hike and as we climb Grábrók, two other craters formed in the same eruption that become visible.
We then leave the beaten track in search of a real hidden gem, arriving at a beautiful fjord where we can see the unique rock formation Hvítserkur. This 49 foot basalt stack rises out of the water and you can decide if it is a dragon or elephant drinking from the water.
From here, it is only a short drive to Dalvík, a small fishing village where we will spend the night in the 3* Hotel Dalvik. Each night if the forecast is favourable we will look for the Northern Lights.
The Hotel Dalvik is centrally located in the intimate fishing village of Dalvík, just a 3-minute walk from the seafront on the Eyjafjörður Fjord. The hotel offers views of Tröllaskagi Mountains and in the lobby, there is a bar and a sitting area with TV. Breakfast is served in the large breakfast room. Standard Rooms with Private Bathroom have free Wi-Fi access.
After breakfast, we head out and to the stunning and historic waterfall, Goðafoss, the waterfall of the gods. The water falls from a height of 39 feet over a width of 38 feet. The waterfall has a unique half circle shape and makes for stunning photos.
We then take a short drive to the Lake Mývatn region. Mývatn is the fourth largest lake in Iceland. The lake has countless small islands and the lake is surrounded by a stunning volcanic landscape. As we travel around the lake we visit the enchanting Skútustaðagigar pseudo craters which were formed when fresh lava entered the lake and trapped the wet sediment underneath, causing many steam eruptions around 2,300 years ago. Close to the craters is Dimmuborgir, a fascinating lava field with incredible, massive lava rock sculptures, huge rock pillars, caves, caverns, tunnels, and lava bridges, which makes for some great walks.
We then head for Hell, at least that is what the name of the Víti Crater means, which is our next stop and this 300m-wide crater was formed in 1724 when a massive eruption took place in the Krafla Volcano. The violent volcanic event lasted for five years, the crater is filled with milky blue and green water, and the ground around it is still steaming, giving it a surreal look.
Our next stop is the Námaskarð geothermal fields, which are part of the Krafla volcano system, and is highly active today. Although there is no fresh lava surfacing, there are wildly bubbling hot springs, mud pots, and loud, meter-high fumaroles surrounded by poisonous soil with minerals that paint the site in extremely vivid colours. The air smells intensely of sulphur, which can be quite unpleasant, but the sights will definitely make you forget about the smell!
Travelling back to the hotel we will stop at the beautiful Mývatn Nature Baths. These baths are often referred to as the Blue Lagoon of the North and colour of the water is the same milky-blue. Entry to the baths is an optional extra and should you wish to relax and enjoy the benefits of the natural geothermal water for an hour and a half you can do so. Those who choose to stay dry can have a something to eat or a coffee in the restaurant and enjoy the view.
On our way back to the hotel in Davik, we will drive through Akureyri, the capital of North Iceland. Even though it is very small, Akureyri is the largest city outside of the greater capital area.
After breakfast the next day we head the short distance over to the harbour and board a boat to go on an amazing whale watching tour. Dalvík is famous for its incredibly high whale watching success rates. We will probably see some humpback whales, as they are abundant in the bay all year round. -White-beaked dolphins, harbour purposes, and minke whales are also often seen in the bay. If you get really lucky you could see Killer Whales or even the mighty Blue Whale.
After seeing the whales, you will have the chance to grab a rod and do some sea angling on the way back to the harbour. We will barbecue the catch as soon as we arrive and share the fresh, amazing food together.
We will then start the long drive back to Reykjavik and along the way, we will stop off at the charming Glaumbær Turf Farm. The farm is made up of 13 age-old turf houses with walls built of turf layered in a herringbone pattern. It is said farm has stood since the Age of the Settlements in 900 AD. The present buildings are newer and the oldest one was built sometime in the 18th century.
Leaving the farm behind, we will head to Reykjavík, arriving at the city at around 8pm and you will be dropped off at your hotel of the night before your transfer back to the airport and your flight home the following day.
