Blue Ice Glacier Hiking & Climbing

DESCRIPTION

An exhilarating day out, providing a unique experience of walking on a glacier connected to a volcano, leaving you with lasting memories of exploring Icelandic nature in one of its most breath-taking environments. This adventure provides moderate challenges rated between 2 and 3 out of 5.

This tour has all the ingredients for a magical day out where you will truly feel like you are in the Land of Ice. And given that 11% of Iceland is covered in glacier, it’s a great idea to spend some time exploring one of these giant ice masses. Our playground for the day is in the south of Iceland and you’ll be exploring Sólheimajökull glacier which is connected to the Mýrdalsjökull volcanic ice cap. Sólheimajökull is 15 km long, up to 2 km wide and covers approximately 44 km².

To give you some idea of what can be found in this region and of the size of the glaciers, Mýrdalsjökull is the 4th largest glacier in Iceland and over a mountain pass to the east is the 6th largest glacier in Iceland, Eyjafjallajökull. Sólheimajökull is a vast glacier tongue that drains neighbouring Mýrdalsjökull. Up on the heights of Mýrdalsjökull and under its ice cap is one of Iceland’s most famous volcanoes, Katla. So, this region is rich in natural landmarks and ripe with stunning views thanks to the ever changing, ancient glaciers.

Before we venture onto the glacier, our friendly and experienced guides make sure you’re kitted up and ready to go with all the gear – crampons, safety lines, and ice axes. For your safety and comfort, we recommend you wear hiking boots, which we are happy to rent to you. As we’re spending a few hours on the ice, to make sure you’re warm and cosy, we ask you to wear suitable clothing, such as wind and waterproof jacket and trousers, hat, and gloves.

So, what can you expect on the glacier, Sólheimajökull? Firstly, as the nature of glaciers is that they are constantly evolving, your experience of this rugged and raw terrain is unique. You’ll see the most amazing azure and cobalt blues in the ice, waiting to be explored – and photographed.

You’ll see crevices, ice formations, sink holes, caves, and jagged ridges and our guides make sure you’re secure and safe and are full of fun facts and information about the glacier. On the tour, there will also be an opportunity to try ice climbing and our guides are with your every step of the way to support you as you brave the heights.

On our way back to Reykjavik, we stop at the beautiful Skógafoss waterfall that some might recognize from the film Thor: The Dark World.
